In 1998 Tribe of One was formed. It is a performance collective combining musicians, dancers, spoken word poetry and live action performance painting. For 11 years Tribe of One has been touring Canada and the U.S. and as far away as war-torn Kosovo, where the group performed at a United Nations benefit concert with Bruce Cockburn. In 2006 Tribe of One experienced a Red River Renaissance with the addition of Métis musicians and First Nation dancers. This new Tribe collective expression has garnered enthusiastic response from audiences, festival directors, educators and politicians, including the Minister of Culture.

Tribe of One thrills audiences with their wildly original concerts that feature Rik on acoustic/electric guitar, piano, ocarinas and stomp box, and Marie-Josée Dandeneau, a Métis multi instrumentalist on upright/fretless bass, didgeridoo and djembe, Buffy Handel dancing and Tina Newlove painting.

"What a unique show! Tribe of One will captivate you with music, dance and visual art, which represnt the love and pride these artists share for their country."
Lynn Munilla, Artistic Director, Festival du voyageur

"I was actually moved to tears, stricken with emotion and the beauty of not only the music and the visuals, but of the message they so effortlessly convey. I have never seen a group that could at once, be both joyous and driving, yet dark and haunting. The amount of sound coming off the stage was incredible, and the dancers complimented that sound perfectly."
Ken Jaworski, Artistic Director, Brandon Folk Festival

Artists’ Biographies

Rik Leaf is a multi instrumental folk-poet, artistic activist and the creative force behind Tribe of One, a performance collective founded in 1998 that combines folk-roots music, live action painting and Aboriginal dancers.

Marie-Josee Dandeneau is a French Canadian multi-instrumental musician from St-Boniface, Manitoba. Specializing in double bass and electric fretless bass, she reflects her French Canadian and Métis heritage in her playing.

Buffy Handel is an Anishinabe First Nations hoop dancer and founder of Indian Pearl Productions. Interpreting the songs through a variety of styles, Buffy utilizes the richness of her First Nation heritage, costumes and culture making each performance a rich multi cultural experience. She's performed at 1999 Pan Am Games, 2004 Juno Awards and the 2004 Esquao Awards.

Tina Newlove, an award winning painter and performance artist creates stunning visual images on stage throughout each concert performance. In addition to live action painting on stage Tina tours with galleries of original art work and print reproductions bringing the creation and appreciation of visual art into every concert and festival appearance. Tina won First Prize in the 14th Annual Juried Art Exhibition during Lakeshore Arts in 2007 and her work has been part of the City of Toronto's Permanent Collection since 2005.

Tribe of One has a history of inspiring creative partnerships with humanitarian organizations including the Red Cross, U.N.I.C.E.F., War Child Canada and the Department of Foreign Affairs. Their multi cultural appeal has taken the group across Canada and the U.S. and as far away as Pristina, Kosovo, where they joined fellow Canadian activist Bruce Cockburn, performing at a United Nations benefit event hosted by Vanessa Redgrave.

What does a work of art sound like?

June 5 at 3 pm

Everyone is welcome!

Music at the Latcham Gallery
In conjunction with the Annual Juried Exhibition
Hosted by singer-songwriter Marie-Lynn Hammond

Saturday, June 5 at 3 pm

The Latcham Gallery is pleased to present its fourth What Does a Work of Art Sound Like event!

Local musicians are invited to sign up for this free-to-the-public, open-mic-style event. Here’s how it works: We’re looking for anybody wanting to perform a song or an instrumental that relates to a work in the gallery’s current art exhibition, The Annual Juried Exhibition. So, first, check out the exhibition, then choose (or better yet, compose!) a song or piece of music that relates to a particular work (or works) in the show. Juried shows tend to feature a variety of subject matter, which should help inspire performers to choose or create complementary music.

Then come and share it April 4 with other musicians and listeners in the gallery itself. Please be prepared to say a few words about how you chose or came to write your piece of music, and how you feel it relates to the show. And have a second song ready to perform in case there’s time (this one doesn’t have to relate to the exhibition, but if it does, that’s great.)

We’ll have a small sound system on site for performers to use and light refreshments, so just bring your voice and/or instrument, invite friends to come listen, and enjoy!

If you’re a musician in the region and want to take part in this event, please call us at (905) 640-8954 or write Maura at info@latchamgallery.ca to reserve a spot.
And tell your friends about it!

On Saturday, November 14, 2009 the Gallery celebrated its Annual Fundraising Gala with a special concert by Molly Johnson. It was a huge success! Thank you to everybody who helped out and contributed!

Stay tuned for the exciting announcement of our 2010 performer!
